Aligning Strategy and Action:
Maps, Metrics and Balanced Scorecards

Audience: Executives, Financial Services, Healthcare, Human Resources, General Business

Some experts claim that 90% of business strategies fail due to poor execution. Yet when Mobil Oil changed strategy its thirty-four divisions saw their revenue increase 30% and they moved from last place to first in their segment. Crown Castle International, the world’s largest telecommunication infrastructure company, used the same methods and saw their stock price increase by 600% over their industry average. Both these companies have publicly attributed a large part of their successes to 3rd Generation Balanced Scorecards.

So what are 3rd Generation Balanced Scorecards and why are they important to organizations? Whether you are a rapidly growing business with 100 employees or a diverse global corporation you will find the four steps outlined in this presentation invaluable when translating your strategy into action. In fact, the Harvard Business Review proclaimed these four steps as one of the most important business concepts to come out of the 1990s.

Participants in this presentation will:

  • See the results achieved by well-known organizations using Strategy Maps and Balanced Scorecards
  • Understand what dooms an incorrect implementation to failure
  • See how to build a 6'x8' visual map of an organization's strategy
  • Identify leading and lagging metrics that impact strategic goals
  • Understand how 3rd Generation Balanced Scorecards align organizations with strategy
  • See Balanced Scorecards using Microsoft Excel and pbViews

Managing Intangible Assets:
Helping Your Client's Reach their Strategic Goals
Audience: CFOs, CPAs, Financial Services, Accountants

Since the late 1500’s when Fra Luca Pacioli first documented double-entry accounting, businesses have been managing and accounting for tangible assets. But, the business world is rapidly changing. Recent estimates put 75% to 85% of the value of US businesses in their intangible assets, people, culture, intellectual property, processes and more. To effectively manage intangible assets we need new tools.

Balanced Scorecards with Strategy Maps are proving to be excellent for managing intangible assets, aligning the organization with strategy, and ensuring strategic execution. In a recent survey by the Institute of Management Accountants 90% of respondents said their organizations would be well served by using Balanced Scorecards. And when Bain & Co., international consultants, surveyed 6,300 clients as to what strategic tools they used, more than 60% used Balanced Scorecards with better than an 80% satisfaction rate.

Participants in this interactive presentation will:

  • Understand why accounting and measurement of intangible assets is critical in our new world of business

  • See the results achieved by well-known organizations using Strategy Maps and Balanced Scorecards
  • Understand what types of organization's can best use Strategy Maps and Balanced Scorecards
  • Build a 6'x8' visual map of an organization's strategy
  • Identify leading and lagging metrics that impact strategic goals
  • See how a Balanced Scorecard is used to manage intangible assets

Ensuring Strategic Value and Enduring Performance in Your Projects
Audience: CxOs, Quality Managers, Six Sigma Black Belts, Baldridge Examiners, Project Managers, Performance Consultants, Financial Services, Healthcare

Six Sigma, Lean, TQM, Baldridge and Project Management all aim to improve the quality, efficiency and performance in organizations. Yet, none of these sciences help unless the right projects are selected and there is enduring change.

Harvard Business Review proclaimed Balanced Scorecards as one of the most important business concepts to come out of the 1990s. They help executives and senior managers translate strategy into initiatives, align the organization with strategic goals and monitor performance. Understanding Balanced Scorecards will help practitioners:

  • Select projects critical to an organization’s success

  • More easily identify a project sponsor

  • Help management validate metrics and the Strategic Value Chain

  • Monitor projects for enduring performance

Executive Dashboards and Operational Dashboards are a cousin of Balanced Scorecards. They act like the instrument dashboard of a jet, enabling you to keep a project in balance from the 50,000’ view and then drill down into areas that need detailed attention. They keep you from being overwhelmed by reams of “data” and “information.” The processes used in creating a Balanced Scorecard will help you build an operational or executive dashboard that is valid and valuable and not a repeat of useless metrics.

Participants in this interactive presentation will:

  • See how to build a 6'x8' visual map of an organization's strategy
  • Identify projects on the Strategic Value Chain
  • Know the difference between operational dashboards and Balanced Scorecards
  • Learn why gauges and dials are cute but dangerous
  • See examples of Microsoft Excel-based Balanced Scorecards and dashboards

Accelerating Supply Chain Performance!
Audience: Quality Managers, Supply Chain Managers, Operations and HR Managers, CPAs, Six Sigma Black Belts, Baldridge Examiners, Project Managers, Performance Consultants, Financial Services, Healthcare

Everyone has heard that what you measure is what you get, but:

  • Are you sure you are measuring the right things?
  • Do your performance improvements help strategic success?
  • Do your measures produce the results you want?
  • Are your measures even valid?

Measuring manufactured goods for quantity and quality can be straightforward. But, our world has changed. 75% of the value in the US economy is now in intangible assets – people, processes, culture, ideas and data. How can you measure these assets and their impact on your company’s vitality and bottom-line?

Participants in this interactive presentation will:

  • Build a 6'x8' visual map of an organization's strategy
  • Identify leading and lagging metrics that impact strategic goals
  • Learn how to prove a metric's validity
