The reports and dashboards shown in this gallery
are samples of the type of work done by Tor Consulting. Our reports,
scorecards, and dashboards are created in Microsoft Excel and
may use add-ins for enhanced features. They operate on all
Windows systems and can update continuously, at timed intervals,
or manually.
Ron Person has been creating reports, dashboards,
and scorecards in Microsoft Excel since the mid-1980s. He
created one of the first Executive Information Systems in
Windows. Ron has
authored multiple best-selling books on Microsoft Excel with
sales of his Excel books exceeding one million copies.

Operational, Control, and Analytic Dashboards
Balanced Scorecard
The large majority of executive dashboards and Balanced Scorecards are created in native
Microsoft Excel. Even major corporations, such as Bank of
Tokyo-Mitsubishi, use Excel for their Balanced Scorecard rather than a burdensome and
highly-expensive business intelligence system. Scorecards like
this may be updated manually, updated from text files
downloaded from databases, or updated continuously by linking
to one or more
databases.
An Excel-based scorecard, like the one below
showing 17 mini-dashboards, shows live charts, indicates alert
status with blue, yellow, or red. It also shows actual vs.
target values for the current time period. Clicking on one of
these mini-charts drills-down to a supporting Excel chart
showing detailed data like those that follow.

Clicking a mini-chart on the main scorecard can
open detailed charts that give you additional information.

One of the most effective ways of creating Excel
Balanced Scorecards or executive dashboards is to drill-down to
detailed data that also shows the data definition, accountable
manager contact information, current status, and comments about
status resolution and next actions. This enables executives to
know how an issue is being handled.

Some Excel scorecards can be effective using only
simple text based dashboards. These scorecards are quick to
construct, but do not have the more extensive analytics
available in graphical dashboards.

Flash-Enabled Web Dashboards
The following dashboards were created in Excel,
but they have been enabled to run within a Flash interface so
they can run securely over the internet. These dashboards, like
the native Excel dashboards we produce, can be updated
continuously or at set intervals. Data can come from a simple
text file downloaded from one or more computers or by
dynamically linking the dashboard to a database.
The following flash-enabled samples can be
downloaded and run in your Internet browser. They have been
created with Microsoft Excel and published in Flash to give them
an enhanced graphical interface that runs over the Web. To
download these samples, click on the figure. When the sample
loads in your Internet browser you may be asked to enable an
ActiveX object. This will enable the Flash animation. These
samples use slider bars and drop-down menu selectors. Almost all
of the features shown in these "snazzy" web-enabled dashboards
can also be created in native Excel.
Joint Commission Clinical Quality Indicators
for Hospitals
This clinical quality indicators dashboard contains "dummy" data
for the major clinical quality indicators recommended for
hospitals by the Joint Commission (JCAHO). Click on the
accordion menu on the left to have access to more than 20
different metrics. (Native Excel can create dashboards with
equivalent functionality and only slightly different appearance.)

Manufacturing Key Performance Indicators
This manufacturing dashboard contains 27 sets of of data for two
facilities over three years. A dashboard like this makes all the
data readily accessible to the management team. Unlike the
numeric Excel spreadsheets that were previously used by
management, this dashboard makes it is easy to see historic
trends and compare data between facilities. Gauges at the bottom
indicate by needle position and color whether current results
are within target.

Economic Progress and Opportunity
This dashboard contains data sets of inflation adjusted data
from the US Bureau of Census for, Per Capita Income, Median
Household Income, Poverty Rate, Unemployment Rate, and Job
Growth for the nation, for all states, and for all counties in
California.
A dashboard like this gives people at all
educational and experience levels the ability to see trends and
comparisons. I've built the dashboard so by making a selection
from the drop-down boxes and check boxes on the left you can
compare two different regions, see the trend for region 1, see
the national average, the leading state, and the leading
California county.
For a real eye-opener download this dashboard and
check the "National Average" check-box at the lower-left for
Median Household Income as shown below. If you haven't
experienced it already in your pocket book, you can see the
flat-line in the national median household income from 1999 to
2006. I haven't updated the data set since 2006 as it takes
considerable work to get the inflation adjusted data.

Executive
Dashboards
Executive dashboards can show a great deal of
information in a well-constructed layout. Having all critical
strategic and operational data on one sheet can aid in better and
faster decision making. (Although I am still a big proponent of
the "Critical Few" metrics.) In most cases I recommend putting
the strategic critical few metrics at the top left and
operational metrics arranged in related groupings.
This example shows how a combination of
mini-graphics and numeric data can put all key performance
indicators on one screen or one printed page. Color alerts bring
the eye to important issues. Mini-charts show trends. And
specialized charts, like the bullet charts in the center column,
show a great deal of relative trend and target information in a
small space.
Although a dashboard this dense may seem
overwhelming to the uninitiated eye we've learned that
executives and managers who are using dashboards with their own
data quickly understand this dashboard and are able to grasp
changes to the business they might never have seen before.
